Team Missing Link (Rune Malterud and Stian Aker) have won the
Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race
. The Norwegian pair crossed the line and arrived at the Geographic South Pole at 7pm on Jan 21st, completing the race 770km in 17 days and 11 hours.
Congratulations to the Canadian Expedition for Vitae Foundation that succeed in climbing the highest peak in South America, the Aconcagua at 6962 meters! Four members of the expedition team made it successfully to the summit. Patrick Bertrand, Mario Soulard, Xavier Breton and Daniel Klink were very happy and proud to see the summit but had to come down after only a few minutes because of bad weather. Talking of bad weather, 4 climbers paid with their life the ascension of the Aconcagua in the last weeks. The team is now coming back to Mendosa to rest before they return to Canada next week.
Here's some news about athletes wilder than average!
Raid Races to the South Pole
For those who like the cold, there is now 2 races to choose from in Antarctica. For those who think that the Antarctic Ice Marathon & 100k is not enough, there's the Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race . The Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race, to the far end of the earth, will be the first race to the South Pole since Scott and Amundsen’s historic race nearly 100 years ago. Roald Amundsen arrived on Dec. 1911, Robert Scott on Jan. 17 1912. Affter almost two weeks of intensive Polar Training in Antarctica coving approximately 100 nautical miles, teams of 3 will set off across the Antarctic Plateau to race 430 nautical miles across the largest ice cap in the world to the Geographic South Pole. The racers will face constant challenges throughout their journey: surving in temperatures as low as -50C, navigating and skiing while pulling a 70Kg. pulk (sled), climbing up to 9300 ft. to the South Pole and through everything working together as a team. The South Pole Race, to the far end of the earth, will be the first race to the South Pole since Scott and Amundsen’s historic race nearly 100 years ago. Vendée Globe
While crazy event are taking place on the ground, the best skippers on the planet are racing in the ultimate regata, the Vendée Globe. This is a sailing race around the world, for singlehanders, without any stopover. At this time, almost half of the fleet sailed around the mythic Cape Horn. The French Michel Desjoyaux is leading this spectacular race with a mere 4386 nautical miles to go! He is currently 246 miles ahead of Roland Jourdain, also from France. Note the excellent perfomance of Samantha Davies on Roxy that is currently 4th after 67 days of intense sailing. Advices on how to get to Blanc-Sablon There are many ways to get to Blanc-Sablon. The easy way is to get here by plane. However, there is a second way to get here via Deer Lake (Newfoundland). Many airlines go to Deer Lake Airport (YDF). From there, you can either connect with a local airline to Blanc-Sablon or drive to the St-Barbe-Blanc-Sablon Ferry (3H30 drive). If you choose that option, you should reserve your place on the Ferry at this adress: www.marine-atlantic.ca. For Ferry schedule click here. March 3rd, 2008 Yet again, Mother Nature
gave a perfect day for racing the Frigid
Infliction with temps getting into the upper 20s, fresh falling
snow. After getting maps and having some time for questions and
plotting, teams walked along a dark trail to starting line lit
by luminaries. At 5:18, the racers were off - three snowshoe points
in any order had the first teams back in just over an hour. From
there, 4 cross-country ski points brought them to a crackling
fire and smiling Jim who had them start candles for gear-check.
One more CP and TA 2 meant a new map and leaving skis behind for
an hour or so of post-holing toward the tyrollean traverse. With
four ropes (kept tightened :) there weren't many bottlenecks,
and most teams got past the challenge without needing assistance.
Last but not least, 7 snowshoe points in any order, including
a small cave (!) and a smiling family. Finally, the finishline!
With a time on course of 7:49, Team Eastern Mountain Sports and
EnduranceAventure.com crossed together in 1st place after trading
the lead all day. All teams were more than happy to shower, grab
some Madhouse Munchies, and wait for dinner and prizes. Media Coverage Here's some Medias talking
